Former Manchester City and Everton defender Eliaquim Mangala is one of five Valencia players and coaching staff to have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

It was announced on Sunday morning that Mangala's Valencia team-mate Ezequiel Garay became the first La Liga player to test positive for the virus.

Later, it emerged five Valencia players and coaches were put under self-isolation after testing positive.

Mangala has confirmed he tested positive for the virus and said: "I knew today that I am coronavirus positive.

"I'm feeling good and I have no symptoms associated with the virus. However, I am confined in house and separated from my family.

"I learned that we can carry the virus without having symptoms, that's why I recommend everyone to follow the confinement measures and avoid contact with other people, as much as possible, even if you feel well."

Manchester City have sent their best wishes to their former defender via social media.

They said: "Everyone at Manchester City wishes you a speedy recovery, Eliaquim."

La Liga declared last Thursday that Spain's first and second divisions have been postponed until the weekend of April 4.

Elsewhere Italy's Football Federation will request for Euro 2020 to be suspended over the novel coronavirus outbreak so they can be able to conclude the Serie A season.

"We will propose to UEFA the delay of the European Championships," Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian Football Federation told the SportMediaset television channel.

"We will try to get to the end of this [domestic] championship because it is fairer and more correct after the many investments and sacrifices of our clubs."

Top-tier football across Europe have been shut down over the spread of the coronavirus, with domestic and international club tournaments either suspended or postponed.
